Adventures of Riding the Four Corners of the United States by Motorcycle

Day 11 - Corner #3 - Close

Today we started early on our round trip to the Keys (with Key West as our "Corner #3"), as it is easier and cooler to do so. But the heat and humidity had us sweating before we started. It was 35 degrees Centigrade and over 90% humidity.

The trip was fairly uneventful (except when we came to part of the bridge we had to jump over the missing span - see photo). We arrived in Key West after a stop in Key Largo at "Doc's Diner" (next to his Optometrist office so he actually is a Dr.) where we were clearly with the locals. The trip was tedious after our freeway riding as we were limited to single lane most of the way, at 45 mph. After 125 miles of beach-town-strip-like streetscapes (with a few long beautiful bridges over multicoloured waters) we were ready to record the necessary details, mail off the required information and take the obligatory picture in front of the Key West Post Office sign (having first asked 3 young men to move - they later wanted pictures with us and the bikes as they were crew off a Carnival ship). The roosters at ths Post Office knew we had something to crow about.

We had conquered two-thirds of the distance required for the "Four Corners", traveling 7600 kms in 10 and 1/2 days.

One other matter we needed t deal with: changing our tattered Canadian flags (mine was down to half of a maple leaf). New flags for the second half. 10 and 1/2 more days to get to Madawaska Maine.

The return trip was seemingly faster (although George had a Sheriff on his tail for quite a bit of the way - Harleys do have a reputation). We arrived back at the same motel we stayed at before just ahead of the loudest thunderstorm I recall, with rain teeming down for an hour. We needed to wash the bikes anyway.

Tomorrow North for the first time this trip.
