Adventures of Riding the Four Corners of the United States by Motorcycle
Day 2 - Straight Shot
The story of our day was sizzling hot, speedy (but not too fast) and serious mileage.
Starting out from our wonderful digs at the Paulls, we had a quick stop at Starbucks then hit the road. Clear skies but still cool (a short lived state), we were on the road by 7 a.m.
I-5 is pretty well a straight shot to the Mexican border (our second "corner"), and with speed limits between 65 and 70 (with some tolerance we thought), the miles clicked by in relatively uneventful fashion. Stops for water (including one in Weed, California, in the shadow of Mt. Shasta) were mandatory given that the temperatures rose to over 90 by the time we hit California. Note that the sign for entry into California would have required perching our bikes on a narrow shoulder with 16 wheelers, jake brakes blustering, just a few feet away. To take the picture would have me run out into the 6 lane freeway. Now our buddy Jim would have held up the traffic to get that shot but being timid souls we took the "leaving Oregon" shot instead.
Despite encountering numerous speed traps and marked cruisers, our theory on "tolerances" held, and we arrived at our planned destination, Woodland, California (a few miles north of Sacramento) by 6 p.m.
11 hours with appropriate stops and we still covered over 900 km.
Bikes and bodies are holding up well.
